GRID SOLUTIONS
Magnetically Controlled Shunt Reactors (MCSR)

MCSR is a static Flexible AC Transmission Systems (FACTS) solution for flexible controlled dynamic compensation of reactive power

Ensures automatic control of voltage / reactive power / power factor at elected level

Strengthens electric system stability

Applications

Increasing throughput capacity of transmission lines, mid-point compensation

Can be connected to busbars or in line; when used as line reactors, help energize the lines by reducing overvoltage; voltage control of non-loaded lines

Eliminate preconditions for system blackouts; ensures smooth blackstart operation by connecting lines and controlling voltage under no load

Ensure voltage control in weak grids without losing stability

Power oscillation dumping (POD)

Simplification of offshore project connection

Power flow controls through magnetically controlled series impedance device (MCSX); no risk of subsynchronous oscillations

Underlying principle

At the core of MCSR is a high-voltage high-power ferromagnetic amplifier, whose power is continuously adjusted by changing saturation of its core

The control unit based on power electronics is a small device with only a fraction of MCSR rated power

Product range

Up to 500 kV

No practical limit on power rating — scalable through three-phase and single-phase configurations

Inductive and capacitive compensation – continuous dynamic control across the full operating range
